To be a better person means to change your current self-state to become more efficient in fulfilling your life goals and purpose. Changing for the better is a continuous process and requires patience. It needs intentionality, time, and action. The areas of life that we should work on are spirituality, physical health, mental health, relationships, and career. The good thing about our entire well-being is they act like dominos. If you do well in taking care of your soul, your physical and mental health will improve as well, and so on.
However, this is only possible if you take changing for the better seriously.
Change to be a better person can be an extremely disturbing process externally and internally.
External change is the change on the surface and is easily noticeable by the naked eye. For example: losing fifteen pounds in three months, physical eyes will easily notice the difference.
Internal change is the change in the soul. It is felt from within and radiates outward through the radiance of your energy.
However, whether you want (1) to lose weight to look better or (2) to lose weight to honor and protect the Creator’s masterpiece in you, the three steps I am going to share are essential to becoming a better person.

3 Steps to Be a Better Person
Step 1. Establish clarity of purpose and strong motivation
A clear purpose and strong motivation about why you want to change are crucial in pursuing any goal. You will only get to your destination if you know from the beginning where you want to go (clarity) and how much fuel you need to sustain yourself (motivation) along the way. Clarity and motivation work together to boost each other.
Be clear about what you want and why you want it.
Clarity of purpose is the foundation to improve who you are and the way you live. Your what and why must be well-defined and strong. Creating a solid foundation gradually enhances character and willpower.
If your reasons are not clear and strong, everything will be temporary. You might go back to your old nature and efforts might be put to waste. A clear reason will serve as a concrete anchor that will pull you back to the purpose when you get tired, lost, or distracted.
Motivation should be strong and sustainable.
Motivation is the fuel that ignites and sustains you until you reach the goal. It must be strong enough to keep you going. Like a moving vehicle, you need to replenish it regularly to avoid running out of fire and drive to go on.
Motivation also helps you to stay inspired, focused, and disciplined. When your soul calls you to be a better person, expect that there will be tests and challenges. Motivation is not always a matter of feeling but a continuous decision of choosing to keep going even when days get hard. This will transform your motivation into discipline. And when you have discipline, the battle is already half won. Discipline is the most important character if you want to change and be a better person. Cultivate and practice it early on the journey.
Journaling Prompts to Gain Clarity and Motivation
Reflect and dig deep. You will be surprised by unexpected discoveries from your subconscious mind. Write your answers on a paper. You can also start a Write to Heal Diary using the prompts. Always remember that writing our thoughts brings magic.
- Why do I want to be a better person? and achieve my goals?
- Who/what are my inspirations? [Are you doing it for yourself? For the people you love? Or for the fulfillment of your life purpose?]
- What are my doubts and fears that hinder me from taking this shift seriously? [Doubt and fear present themselves each time you dare to do something new or different. When you become aware of their presence you become familiar with the hurdles that may come. This will give you ideas on how to overcome them.]
- What do I want to happen for myself? [List down a detailed vision of what you want to be as a result. Take your time on this. Close your eyes and use your imagination.]
- How can this goal serve me on a long-term basis? [List the benefits that you may get in the future.]
Step 2. Create an action plan
A written plan is always better than a plan whispered in the wind.
- On a separate sheet, write all the action plans that you can think of as many as you can. Do not hesitate to write everything that pops into your mind. There is no right or wrong idea when it comes to listening to your instinct.
- Identify from the list of plans which can be both effective and doable for you. Avoid being too idealistic. Choosing the most ideal and glamorous actions can lead to failure because they are difficult to sustain. Start small yet easy to maintain. For every action step, ask yourself: Can I commit and be consistent with this plan?

- Get a blank sheet and pen. Start doodling. Start putting your ideas into writing. Draw if you are a visual person. You may not be able to get everything figured out in the beginning but your drafts always play an essential role in the process of improving yourself and achieving your goals. Explore the possibilities that you think you can do.
Step 3. Take action and do not give up
Taking action is the most difficult part of the process. As you go on, challenges will come and excuses will follow.
Be mindfully and soulfully present when working on your goals. This will help you use time wisely and it will also increase your focus. Our minds are now so used to being distracted all the time – mobile phones, the internet, social media, and world materialistic promises. It is more challenging to concentrate on the things that matter more because getting distracted has become one of our brain habits.

Do not hurry the results. For example, I noticed a lot of people who try to lose weight want to see a drastic result after a few days to a week of trying. When they realize that their efforts are not working, they will either stop or come up with excuses to convince themselves to give up.
Results take time. Taking action every day for a week will not produce quality and significant effects in your life. It is a lifelong commitment and should be a part of how you live your life. All good things require hard work, commitment, and time.
Prepare your mind, body, and soul for the new quest that awaits you. A prepared spirit wins the battle in the mind. The quest will be challenging and only those who are patient and understanding of themselves have a high chance to achieve their dreams.
Final Encouragements
- Your capacity to commit and become consistent will be your companion in the journey. Not everyone around you will understand and support whatever it is that you want to manifest in your life. Your commitment to your purpose and plans will be your friend.
- Take action and treat each process seriously and wholeheartedly.
- Believe in yourself. Nothing is impossible if your mind and heart are fixed on becoming the person that you want to be.
- Do not choose an easy and fast way because everything that comes easily disappears quickly. Hard work and dedication always pay off.
