It is not usual in our society to talk about spiritual journeys which makes it a lonely road to walk on. Early in my quest, one of the most challenging was to find a teacher or a master who would guide me in discovering my authentic self, connecting to my soul, and living my sacred dream as a writer. One of the best things that I did for myself was reading books.
In my blog, How to Start Your Spiritual Journey, I wrote five easy ways to engage yourself in spiritual life and one of them is reading books on spirituality. Books on spirituality have become my teacher and companion in understanding why I feel and experience certain ways others do not. There are lots of books on spirituality available in most parts of the world and in searching for the right books for you, your intuition or gut feeling is an excellent guide. Of course, don’t forget to read the blurb on the back cover! But if you are still looking for more guidance, here are the five most favorite books I have read on spirituality.
My 5 Most Recommended Books on Spirituality

1. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
Yes, I started with a fictitious novel. All of Coelho’s works are soul-stirring and ‘The Alchemist’ is the most famous and remarkable. (It has a good reason why it is famous and best-selling and it’s worth checking it out.)
The Alchemist is a story about a shepherd named Santiago who went on a quest to find his personal legend. It speaks of guides and wisdom that you can apply in your journey. Since it is fiction, Coelho wrote spirituality hidden beneath the protagonist’s experiences, encounters, and thoughts. But a true spiritual seeker could read between the lines and find the hidden gems.
The Alchemist talks about the importance of:
- Paying attention to the signs of the universe
- Having the courage to find and live your personal legend, and;
- Putting love in all that you do.
Bravery and love are what create the magical alchemy in our souls.
Famous Quotes from The Alchemist:
“And when you want something, all the universe conspires to
help you achieve it.”
“When we love, we always strive to become better than we are.”
“To realize one’s destiny is a person’s only real obligation.”
2. A Return To Love by Marianne Williamson
A Return to Love is based on the book A Course in Miracles where Williamson wrote her reflections and discoveries as she took the course.
This book is deep and full of wisdom that navigated me to dig deeper into my identity not as a human being but as a medium of love. The book explains that our true identity is love because we are all part of God. It elevated my perspective about God, faith, love, relationships, and miracles to a spiritual level. It helped me to learn more about who I am, and how broken I was because of the separation from God. This book guided me on my way back to my true nature which is love.
Famous Quotes from A Return to Love:
“To trust in the force that moves the universe is faith.”
“Love is what we were born with. Fear is what we have learned here. The spiritual journey is the relinquishment – or unlearning – of fear and the acceptance of love back into our hearts.”
“We came here to co-create with God by extending love.”
3. The Seat Of The Soul by Gary Zukav
Seat Of The Soul is my go-to book whenever I feel disconnected from my authentic nature. This book talks about multi-sensory perception – the ability of a human being to tap into his awareness from a soul level. Zukav believes that we are more than five-sensory beings. Through our intuition, we can expand our awareness of life, become multi-sensory, and achieve authentic power.
This book emphasizes the importance of tapping into our authentic power because when we are on that level of awareness, we become capable of co-creating with the Universe (or God) and fulfilling our purpose.
Seat of the Soul also touches on the topic of karma, the meaning of reverence, intuition, intention, relationship, and souls. This book is jam-packed with insights on spirituality and you will learn and grow from it.
Famous Quotes from The Seat of the Soul:
“The soul is. It has no beginning and no end but flows towards wholeness.”
“When perception of the physical world is limited to the five-sensory modality, the basis of life in the physical arena becomes fear.”
“After an incarnation, the soul returns to its immortal and timeless state. It returns once again to its natural state of compassion, clarity, and boundless love.”
4) The Power Of Intention by Wayne Dyer
Wayne Dyer was considered the father of modern spirituality. I considered him as one of my first mentors (virtually) in my spiritual journey. His books, talks uploaded on YouTube, and podcasts served as my foundational education to understand myself, my purpose, and my connection with the divine Creator.
He wrote several books, all worth reading, though my favorite is ‘The Power of Intention’ because it aligns with my spiritual encounters and beliefs. It helped me to understand more about the nature of God and how I can connect with the Spirit that he calls in this book Intention.
He discussed in this book the 7 Faces of Intention:
1. The Face of Creativity
2. The Face of Kindness
3. The Face of Love
4. The Face of Beauty
5. The Face of Expansion
6. The Face of Unlimited Abundance
7. The Face of Receptivity
Dyer’s writing style makes spirituality for everyone because it is easy to understand. He has a gift for making his teachings and principles clear, relatable, and soul-stirring.
Famous Quotes from The Power of Intention:
“Activating intention means rejoining your Source and becoming a modern-day sorcerer.”
“The secret to manifesting anything that you desire is your willingness and ability to realign yourself so that your inner world is in harmony with the power of intention.”
“When you meet anyone, treat the event as a holy encounter. It’s through others that we either find or love our self.”
5. The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron
The Artist’s Way is best for creative people because it offers a spiritual path to higher creativity. It is a course in discovering and recovering your creative self. The course is self-paced and divided into 12 Weeks. Each week contains a focus lesson and exercises to internalize the lesson. People in the creative industry such as writers, painters, and entrepreneurs used this as a tool for healing, transformation, and to carry out their gifts to the world. We are all creative – we just have to remember it.
Cameron teaches that creativity is a manifestation of our spirituality. This book helped me to remove my creative blocks and empowered my life purpose as a writer.
Cameron’s teaching about Morning Pages and Artist’s Dates helped me nurture my creativity and artistry.
Famous Quotes from The Artist’s Way:
“When we move out on faith into the act of creation, the universe is able to advance. It is like opening the gate at the top of a field irrigation system. Once we remove the blocks, the flow moves in.”
“As we clarify our perceptions, we lose our misconceptions. As we eliminate ambiguity, we lose illusion as well. We arrive at clarity, and clarity creates changes.”
“Anger is meant to be acted upon. It is not meant to be acted out.”
Spiritual journey can be lonely at times and books will be your best friends.
