Getting connected with our intuition is a basic foundation for refining our beliefs, true identity, and purpose in life. It isn’t the mind that shows us the path, but the voice that speaks to us in flashes of thought and gut feelings that keep coming up until we give attention to it.

There are, however, walls that block us from getting in touch with our intuition, and one of them is the misconception that it is only for the chosen ones and that we cannot call ourselves “intuitive” or spiritual because we cannot foresee the future or communicate with the dead. This is not true. We are all intuitive. Intuition is part of human nature, and even if you’re not as attuned as others, it doesn’t mean you’re not intuitive at all.

Intuition is part of our soul. An invisible force that makes the mind, body, and spirit work as one, so we can understand life from different angles other than the ego. And we can always enhance it in ways aligned with our needs and way of life, if we want to. To begin on this journey, here is some basic knowledge about intuition to help you open up your heart to the gift you have inside.

What Is Intuition?

The first step to enhance your intuition is to understand its true meaning and remove the walls that hinder you from embracing your magic. Here are some definitions of intuition.

  • Intuition is a human’s ability to feel or sense energies from the environment, people, and situations without the interference of the reasoning mind. It is having a deep feeling of “you just know”, and it never misleads.
  • Intuition is an invisible and mysterious force that guides and protects us from taking actions that are fear-based and not aligned with our life mission.
  • Intuition is not about finding reasons or justifying decisions, but about letting the inner voice direct you to the path you should walk on.
  • It goes through our ‘spiritual ear’ in form of flashes of thoughts to interpret or connect the things that happened in the past to the present to help you decide for the future.

Other examples of intuition at work:

  • Feeling that something is about to happen and later realizing that you are right about it when it actually happens
  • Can scan or gauge (somehow) other people’s energy
  • A flash of unexpected thought of someone, and that person appeared or communicated to you unexpectedly
  • Sensing that someone needs you, and when you check in, you learn that the person needs someone to talk to, and you’re the right person for it
  • Having a feeling that something is meant for you

There’s a lot more about it that this article cannot cover. And the truth is, intuition cannot be fully described through words. It is not a scientific or cerebral concept but an experience. It comes from the quiet voice that speaks to us when we are uncertain or need guidance when making important decisions.

7 Tips To Enhance Your Intuition

There are various ways to enhance your intuition, and what worked for me may not work for you, and vice versa. This isn’t about how others do it, but about paying attention to what your heart wants to do. The core of heightened intuition is listening, trusting, and engaging yourself in its instructions. Here are 7 tips to enhance your intuition.

1. Meditate to quiet your external reality

You can only hear what your inner world has to say when the outer world is quiet. The routines of the world are designed to keep our minds distracted, and falling into them makes it difficult to get in touch with the voice of our soul. In meditation, we quiet the outer world to awaken the inner world. It brings our overstimulated mind to rest and signals the intuition to take over. It shuts off the noise and dissipates fears so that the ego self and the soul self can exist as one.

You can practice meditation in different forms. It can be something you learned from the culture, religion, tradition, or beliefs you got accustomed to. As long as the intention is to release energies that aren’t helping you to become one with your inner self, you are free to go with it. I was raised Catholic, and it offers several doors to connect with God. However, I found my best practices outside its teachings, like:

  • Conscious breathing to silence and empty the mind while sitting on a cross-legged, and
  • Listening to guided meditations to help navigate the thoughts into a calm state.

The main purpose of meditation is to free the mind from the concerns of the world and take away the fears that come with it. Get the most out of its benefits by creating a space or environment that is quiet and distraction-free. You can turn off the internet connection, silence your gadgets, wake up at least one hour earlier than others, or ask people around you for privacy to get into the moment. Dedicate at least 10 minutes a day to meditate, in your way, and do your best to stick with it, especially when things around you get louder than you can tolerate.

2. Spend alone time to introspect

Introspection is thinking inward and reflecting on your experiences and how you are responding to them. It invites your inner self to take over the persona you display when with others to be at your most authentic state. It allows you to live without having to wear a mask that society expects from you, to know yourself deeper, and become one with your soul.

Intuition is the voice of your true self. Spending time alone with yourself removes the pressure to fit in and reveals your true nature and be comfortable with it. It is also an opportunity to recollect events in your life and connect the dots and realize that everything happens for a reason. As an introvert, I started this practice very young. And looking back, I realized that it helped me enhance my intuition throughout the seasons and situations that have been constantly changing in my life.

Give yourself a break from anyone and anything at least once a week. Go to a place where you can have serenity and reflect on your experiences and how you’re changing through them. It will also encourage you to have conversations with your inner self and become familiar with its voice and presence.

3. Journal your thoughts and emotions regularly

Our thoughts and emotions are reflections of the soul. Writing them longhand is like bringing them right before you to become aware of what is going on inside you. Journaling is an honest conversation with yourself to confront both the good and messy things about you. As a rule of thumb, write without judging yourself and the situations you aren’t proud to be in to reach a state of rawness of mind and heart.

Journaling deciphers the unspoken thoughts inside your head and the desires of your heart yet to be realized. It is like having a best friend who understands your quirks without explaining why you are the way you are. It creates space to respect your flaws and limitations and quiets the need to meet people’s expectations. When you are in tune with your true self, the voice inside you will flow more easily and become more recognizable than when you’re not.

4. Spend time with nature more often

Nature is a powerful life force on earth. Its energy is everywhere and speaks to us all the time. And those who open their eyes and spirit for it can recognize it through intuitive feeling. From simply looking at the sky and breathing in the breeze, to touching the trunk of an old tree, you are inviting your intuition to become one with them.

Human beings are not separate entities from nature. It is fairer to say that we are part of it, rather than as higher beings who have authority over it. Connecting with other living things also means connecting with the inner side of ourselves. When you shower under the vibrant energy of the sun or walk barefoot on the sand while listening to the waves of the ocean, you know that it’s not just the ears and the skin that make you feel them, but your instinct also interprets them.

Talk to plants and animals, wear natural stones and crystal jewelry, and breathe in through the skies and tune in with their energies. Every member of nature has a unique frequency, and vibing them will increase your ability to sense and differentiate energies. Nature and humans are one. We are connected in ways the mind nor science can explain, but the soul instinctively understands. Working with intuition requires listening to the voice that only you can hear and believing it with all your heart, even if the logical mind says otherwise.

5. Consult your inner self when making small decisions

If our soul can talk directly to us, it definitely has a lot to say wiser than our mind does. Consulting it in small decisions might be a foreign approach and find it unnecessary, especially when you’re used to doing simple tasks on autopilot. When going to work, for example, you use your mind to decide which clothes to wear and meticulously think of a match that looks neat and good, and at the same time, will allow you to move comfortably. However, consulting your soul-self looks a bit different. Instead of relying on logic and reason, you ask and say:

“Self, what do you want me to wear today? You are the master of my life, not my ego. Let me do whatever you wish because your desire is my true desire.”

Then you pause for a second, and maybe close your eyes, to feel and receive its response.

This may sound ridiculous, but sometimes, you have to be crazy to do what everybody else doesn’t to experience the invisible guide inside of you. When I was new to recognizing the living soul inside me, I would talk to it about almost everything. I’d ask for the undies it wants me to wear, which bus to ride on my way to work, or the book I need to read to receive signs from the universe. I may be exaggerating and making my life more detailed, but it taught me one important lesson that I strongly hold onto: Our soul is never wrong. It always leads us to the right choices.

6. Follow your inner voice all the time

The true challenge in enhancing intuition is in obedience. How far will you trust the voice that tells you to do it, even if there’s no assurance, clarity, or safety? How much willingness does your heart have when it asks you to let go of things and people your ego doesn’t want to? Following your inner voice isn’t really that easy. It takes a full heart to trust and surrender to something you weren’t sure if real.

Intuition, when discerned correctly, is never wrong. It will never work against you because your soul is always after the fulfillment of your purpose. It takes time, constant practice, and courage to believe in something the logical mind cannot rationalize. And it is only by obeying the voice that you’ll experience its power and magic.

7. Express yourself through the arts and creativity

Creativity is a doorway to the soul. When it is active, the soul opens the world outside the physical realm and remembers its spiritual nature. All of us are creative. We may be differently creative and vary in how fine we do things, but all of us are capable of creating something out of the resources we have at hand.

Art isn’t limited to painting, sculpting, or anything that only “talented” people do with their hands. It is an expression of inner life rather than a sensorial masterpiece. You define what art is for you and how you want to do it. You don’t have to be so good or a prodigy before you call yourself creative or an artist. Creativity is imprinted in our genes because this is our purpose – to cocreate with the Supreme Creator.

You can write, craft, sing, dance, or whatever it is that you’re enthusiastic about. When you create, you ignite your soul to breathe and become alive. Its presence becomes more vivid and stronger to your inner sense, and it gets easier to feel and interpret its messages for you.

Practices or rituals to enhance your intuition may change as you evolve, but the core of it must boil down to this: when you trust your intuition, the more it reveals itself to you.

Intuition is about recognizing and honoring the voice of your soul and surrendering to its will through obedience, and trusting that every message is essential to the fulfillment of what you are meant to do and be.
